Human activities, particularly the burning of carbon, increase temperatures globally, melting the polar ice caps and flooding many of the world’s great cities, such as New York, Los Angeles, Rio de Janeiro, Tokyo, Amsterdam, and Hong Kong. Desertification reduces the global food supply, causing widespread famine, migration and social upheaval. About two-thirds of the human population, and nearly all animal species, perish.
