STUDIO KABUYA

These in-situ sculptural installations are created in fields and meadows of tall grasses using basketry and hairstyling techniques, primarily braiding. I made the first of these installations for Smoke Farm’s Lo-Fi Festival in 2009, and it didn’t take long to begin collaborating with good friend Adria Garcia on this practice. Our collaboration expanded this practice beyond purely formal concerns, and into examinations of public space, ways of honoring and celebrating the land around us, and our own friendship and family heritage. We have created these installations in many beautiful locations around the Seattle area. These installations are meant to be inhabited, and we frequently activate them with performance, dance, teaching, and music. See more at studiokabuya.com
